Green Party Candidate Urges No Vote on Discriminatory Ballot Measure

October 20 (Arlington, VA)—Josh Ruebner, Green Party candidate for Arlington County Board, urged Virginia’s voters yesterday to reject Ballot Question #1, also known as the Marshall-Newman Amendment.

Ruebner’s remarks came at a candidates’ forum hosted by the Arlington Gay and Lesbian Alliance.

According to Ruebner, “Ballot Question #1 is a discriminatory measure that would strip civil rights and domestic benefits from any non-married couple in Virginia, whether heterosexual or homosexual.  This proposed constitutional amendment is an electoral stunt by the fanatical wing of the Republican Party to rally its extremist base to the polls.  It should be rejected by every Virginian who believes in equality and freedom.”

The Green Party supports “full legal and political equality for all persons, regardless or sex, gender, or sexual orientation.”  For more details on the Green Party platform on this issue, click here.
